Simply put, controllers protect your system's batteries and are an important element of any solar power system. When used as a charge controller, they can protect your batteries from being overcharged or as a load controller they can protect your batteries from dangerously being drained by shutting the system down when the voltage drops too low. |

The main function of a Charge Controller, is to protect the batteries from being overcharged by your solar panels. The Controller allows the batteries to be evenly charged by your panels and slows the charge down as the batteries approach being full. If you decide to by-pass this item you will more than likely destroy your batteries. When you balance out what you may think you are saving, please remember that most battery banks are worth protecting and a healthy battery bank will provide you with years of uninterrupted service. Besides having a Charge Controller to protect your batteries, there are a few other steps you should consider. Such as checking your batteries specific gravity with a Hydrometer, check your water levels regularly, incorporate a good monitoring system such as the Tri-Metric Meter into the mix. Choose a controller for your system that can grow along with your needs. It ends up being cheaper to get a bigger Controller now than having to buy an up-grade later so you can add panels to your system. A Controller with meters is an excellent choice. If money is the issue
and we can understand that, you would do well to than purchase a
Controller that meets the needs of the system you are
purchasing. At least in this way you are assuring that you
are protecting your batteries. For example, say your
panels put out a charge of 6 amps, than buy a six amp
Controller, however if you know or think that you are going to
invest in more panels within the next two years and you know
that you aren't going to more than double your charge rate, than
purchase a 12 amp Controller. |
